TL;DR: Technical and filter foams need different processing from furniture foam: what counts is repeatable geometry, a clean edge and no contamination, not seating comfort. Filter foam (reticulated, highly porous) is handled with CNC contour and horizontal machines, often with surface profiling. The biggest trap is blade clogging and dust — which is why such a workstation practically always runs with extraction.
What are technical and filter foams?
Technical foams are materials with defined performance parameters — permeability, absorbency, chemical resistance — and filter foams are their subgroup with an open, reticulated cell structure. In workshop practice you recognise them by the fact that they are not bought "for softness" but for a specific parameter: pores per inch (ppi), density, flammability class or food contact. That difference forces a different approach to cutting — the part has to meet a specification, not just look good.
Which machines are used for technical foams?
Technical and filter foams are cut with CNC contour machines for shapes, horizontal machines for sheets and profiling machines for wavy surfaces — the same machine park as for furniture foam, but in a different regime. The most common configurations:
1. CNC contour cutter — filter inserts, gaskets, shapes from a file.
2. Horizontal cutter — sheets of repeatable thickness for further processing.
3. Vertical cutter — squaring the block, preparing it for the contour machine.
4. Profiling/grooving — wavy surfaces, channels, structures that increase the active area.
5. Extraction and filtration — mandatory, not an accessory.
Why does filter foam dull the blade so quickly?
Reticulated filter foam has many cell-wall edges and little continuous material — so the blade works by constantly striking partitions rather than cutting smoothly. The effect: faster dulling and a greater tendency to tear the edge. That is why with filter foams in-cycle sharpening stops being a convenience and becomes a condition of repeatability. The second effect is dust — fine fragments of cell walls become airborne and settle, which translates directly into the need for dust extraction and filtration.
Furniture foam versus technical foam — what changes in cutting
- Quality criterion — Furniture foam: appearance and comfort; Technical / filter foam: conformity of dimension and parameter
- Typical job — Furniture foam: sheets, parts; Technical / filter foam: shapes, inserts, profiles
- Blade wear — Furniture foam: moderate; Technical / filter foam: higher, requires in-cycle sharpening
- Dust — Furniture foam: medium; Technical / filter foam: high with reticulated structure
- Quality control — Furniture foam: spot checks; Technical / filter foam: frequent, often 100% in batches
How to plan production of filter elements?
Production is planned backwards from the tolerance required by the customer — only that tells you whether horizontal cutting is enough or a contour machine with measurement is needed. A filter element that has to fit a housing usually calls for tighter tolerances than a typical furniture part, while the material is more prone to deformation. The answer is usually rigid clamping, a slower feed and measurement after the material has relaxed. More on tolerances themselves: cutting foam to size.
FAQ
Does filter foam need a separate machine? Not always — most often the same machine with a different regime and more frequent sharpening is enough. A separate machine only makes sense with a large, steady volume.
How to limit dust when cutting technical foams? With local extraction at the blade zone plus a filter and an offcut container. It is a matter of both occupational safety and machine life.
Can technical foams be contour cut from a file? Yes — a CNC contour cutter takes contours from a drawing and repeats them in series, which is the standard for inserts and gaskets.
