Vertical foam cutter - structure, operation, applications

TL;DR: A vertical foam cutter is an industrial machine that cuts blocks of polyurethane foam into flat slices of a given thickness. A CNC controller with a touch panel, linear bearings and pneumatic knife tension guarantee precision of ±1-2 mm and efficiency of hundreds of square meters per shift.

How does a vertical foam cutter work?

A vertical cutter works on the principle of cutting with a band knife moving in a vertical plane. The foam block placed on the work table is moved by two synchronously working sides** (left and right) towards the knife. Each pass of the material through the knife produces one slice of a programmed thickness.

In DZIERGWA type PPA machines, the sides are operated by joysticks with a potentiometer, which gives the operator full control over the speed and precision of material feeding.

Construction of a vertical cutter - key components

Frame and body:
Welded steel structure with high stiffness - the basis for cutting stability. The weight of the machine prevents vibrations that would reduce the quality of the cutting surface.

Linear guides and toothed belts:
The sides (material feeding carts) move on linear bearings and are driven by reinforced toothed belts. This guarantees smooth movement, no play and long-term durability without replacing the guide elements.

Band knife:
Standard cutting element - 25-40 mm wide tool steel strip. Automatic pneumatic knife tension maintains constant tension regardless of belt wear.

CNC control panel:
The touch panel allows you to program up to 10 different cutting thicknesses from one block in automatic mode. Cutting recipes are saved and can be quickly recalled for the next production batch.

Airbag:
Makes it easier to maneuver heavy foam blocks (100-300 kg) on the work table - the operator moves the block without physical effort.

Applications of vertical cutters

  • Furniture industry - cutting inserts for sofas, armchairs, chairs
  • Mattress production - cutting blocks into boards of a given thickness
  • Car upholstery - precise patches for seats and backrests
  • Packaging and logistics - foam forms for protective packaging
  • Construction - PUR/PIR foam insulation boards

Models of DZIERGWA vertical cutters

PPA type - full automation: CNC-controlled synchronous sides, touch panel, pneumatic knife tension, airbag. Option: automatic, foldable left side for blocks with non-standard dimensions.

PP type (manual) - simplified version with manual material feeding. Perfect for smaller upholstery plants and workshops.

PS type (vertical-oblique) - allows oblique cutting at an angle, creating bevels and profiles. Used in the production of wedges, sealing profiles and acoustic elements.

Vertical vs horizontal cutter – what to choose?

  • Vertical cutting machine (PPA): blocks → slices, cutting to given thicknesses, high efficiency for standard furniture and mattress production
  • Horizontal cutting machine (PARK): thin sheets from 7 mm, automatic loading, ideal for continuous production and cutting into large formats

Many DZIRGWA customers have both machines - a vertical one for thicker elements and a horizontal one for thin sheets and boards.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

What is the maximum thickness that the DZIERGWA PPA vertical cutter can cut?

The maximum cutting thickness depends on the model and ranges from 500 mm to over 1200 mm. All parameters are configured to meet the individual needs of the client.

How long does it take to train a vertical cutter operator?

Basic training lasts 1 day and is carried out by our technicians upon delivery of the machine. Includes CNC operation, maintenance and emergency procedures.

Does the machine meet the requirements of the CE Machinery Directive?

Yes. All DZIERGWA machines have a CE declaration of conformity and are delivered with complete technical documentation in accordance with Directive 2006/42/EC.
