TL;DR: A foam cutting machine is a CNC or manual device that divides a block of polyurethane foam into slices, sheets or 2D/3D shapes with a precision of ±1-2 mm. Most often, one of four types is chosen: vertical (PPA), horizontal (PARK, PPAB), contour (KPO, KPA) or hybrid (HPA, KPAH). The choice depends on what you produce - mattresses and sofa inserts, shaped cushions, technical packaging or acoustic panels. Below you will find an overview of all types and tips on how to choose a machine for your production.
What is a foam cutting machine and how does it work
A foam cutting machine transforms a raw block of polyurethane foam (or mineral wool) into ready-made semi-finished products: slices of a specific thickness, thin sheets, upholstery inserts or complex spatial shapes. The heart of modern devices is the CNC control with a touch panel, which allows you to save the cutting program, repeat it without error and limit the operator's involvement in loading the block.
Depending on the design, the cutting tool is:
- band knife (linear cutting, slices and sheets),
- oscillating knife (2D/3D contours in higher density foams),
- heating wire (smooth surfaces, light foams, 3D contours).
The key parameters that manufacturers look at are the maximum block size, cutting thickness range, precision (±1-2 mm), efficiency and degree of automation. If you want to understand the technology itself from scratch, check out the article about foam cutting technology.
Vertical foam cutting machine (PPA)
A vertical cutter is a basic tool in every plant producing mattresses and technical foam. The PPA machine cuts the block into slices with a given thickness from 7 to over 1000 mm, and the CNC controller allows you to cut up to 10 different thicknesses from one block in automatic mode - without re-setting.
The most important features of the vertical machine:
- pneumatic knife tension ensuring an even, perpendicular edge,
- touch panel and cutting program memory,
- repeatability in serial production of patches.
This is a solution for plants that need a large number of even layers of foam - e.g. for further processing, gluing or confectioning mattresses. Details can be found in the [vertical foam cutting machine] guide(/en/wiedza/automat-pionowy-do-ciecia-pianki).
Horizontal foam cutting machine (PARK, PPAB)
The horizontal cutter specializes in cutting thin sheets and patches from a foam block. PARK and PPAB machines are equipped with linear guides, pneumatic clamp and a belt conveyor, which enables continuous production.
This type of foam cutting machine works well where repeatable thin sheet thickness and high efficiency are important - in the production of mattresses, sofa inserts, upholstered furniture** or packaging materials. You can read more about this structure in the article about horizontal foam cutting machine.
CNC contour machine (KPO, KPA)
When you need shapes, not simple slices, you choose a CNC contour machine. The KPO cutter cuts 2D and 3D shapes with an oscillating knife or a string, and programming is done in the devFOAM 2 software with the import of DXF/SVG files. The string variant (KPA, hot wire, wire 200–400°C) gives a smooth surface and works well with light foams and 3D contours.
Typical contour cutting applications:
- upholstery pillows and shapes,
- shaped packaging (cutouts for the product, protective inserts),
- elements for automotive and orthopedics,
- acoustic panels (profiled surfaces).
We wrote more about the possibilities and implementation examples in the text about CNC contour machine.
Hybrid machines and other devices (HPA, KPAH)
Hybrid machines (HPA, KPAH) combine horizontal and contour cutting in one design - a solution for plants that want to limit the number of devices and flexibly switch between sheets and shapes. In addition, there are devices supplementing the production line:
- semi-automatic PPRK - cheaper entry into foam cutting,
- foam waste press - briquettes scraps, reduces the volume of waste and reduces disposal and transport costs,
- pillow stuffer - automates filling pillows with shredded foam or silicone balls,
- mineral wool cutting machines - with hard blades and exhaust, adapted to the dusting and abrasiveness of the material.
You will find a complete overview of the categories in the sections automatic machines and other devices.
How to choose a foam cutting machine - a quick guide
The selection of a machine begins with the question what and in what quantity do you produce:
- even slices from the block → vertical slicer (PPA),
- thin sheets in continuous production → horizontal cutting machine (PARK, PPAB),
- 2D/3D shapes, pillows, packaging → CNC contour machine (KPO/KPA),
- flexibility (sheets + contours) → hybrid machine (HPA, KPAH).
The next criteria are the maximum block size, required precision, daily efficiency and budget. It is also worth taking into account the management of scraps (press) and the operation of programs (devFOAM 2, DXF/SVG import).
